WHEELCHAIR racer Sammi Kinghorn secured her second silver of the Paris Paralympics in the women's T54 1500 metres.

The 28-year-old Borderer clocked three minutes and 16.1 seconds at Stade de France, 2.91 seconds slower than the new Paralympic record set by Swiss gold medallist Catherine Debrunner.

Kinghorn previously claimed Great Britain's first athletics medal of the Games by finishing second in the T53 800m on Sunday.

She said: "Who would have thought a sprinter would get a medal over 1500m? I certainly did not.

"I thought I'd be jostling for fourth, maybe squeeze a third.

"It was all pretty exciting. I kinda got a bit disorientated and I stopped at 200 metres to go because I thought we were done – it's so loud in here which we're not used to. So I learned I need to count laps.

"But that noise is absolutely electric and I'm absolutely buzzing to come away with a medal."

On Kinghorn's second silver medal of the Games, sportscotland chair Maureen Campbell said: "What an incredible performance from Sammi Kinghorn who has won her second medal of these Paralympic Games.

"Winning medals on the global stage is a fantastic achievement and to take home two silver medals is one to be immensely proud of.

"Performing at this level comes after years of hard work and dedication and Sammi and her team have put so much into preparing for these games and we are delighted to see her rewarded for it."
