SAMANTHA Kinghorn continued her 2024 Paralympic Games preparations with a convincing win at the Diamond League meeting in London last Saturday.

The Borderer took top spot in the 800m wheelchair race with a time of 1:43:24.

The 28-year-old is currently having the best season of her career, recording personal bests across all distances.

Kinghorn, of Gordon, told scottishathletics: “It went according to plan, although Lea (Bayekula) went out very fast so I was like, ‘What do I do now?’

“I took it out and overtook Mel (Woods) who tucked in behind and then I tried to relax on the second lap and hold on to it.”

The Borderer, from Red Star AC and coached by Rodger Harkins, will compete in three events in Paris this summer – T53 100m, 400m and 800m.

The former Earlston High School pupil has enjoyed a glittering career.

Kinghorn announced herself on the international scene when she claimed a trio of gold medals at the European Championships in Swansea in 2014.

At Rio 2016 the Borderer finished fifth in the T53 100m, but a year later was back on the podium with a vengeance as she claimed 100m and 200m gold at the World Championships in London, as well as bronze in the 400m.

The Scot claimed her first Paralympic medals with bronze in the T53 100m and silver in the 400m at Tokyo 2020.

Kinghorn was among the first 10 Para Athletics names announced for the Games in the French capital.

It was strong day for the Scots in London, with a Scottish record for Jemma Reekie plus wins for Kinghorn and Ben Sandilands.
