PEEBLES Falcons came out on top in a fiercely contested match against Edinburgh rivals Inverleith Swifts to lift the Scottish Youth Cup.

The U13s travelled to the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Saturday, June 15, with their eyes on more silverware.

The Falcons have rarely been challenged this season, winning the Central Netball Association U13 Division One league title at the end of April with a 162 goal difference from five matches.

But they knew that the final would be a tight match having been beaten by one goal in the group stage by Inverleith Swifts.

Lead coach Neve McLean said: “In the first half of the game the two teams were neck and neck, and at one point in the first quarter Peebles were down by three goals.

“However, Falcons kept their heads up and with a lot of resilience and determination, the girls brought it back in the second and took the lead by four goals!

“Shout-out to GK Madison Smith who managed to get so many important turnovers, hunting the intercepts down.

“By the fourth quarter Falcons got into a great rhythm, resulting in holding onto the lead to take the win.

“We’re so unbelievably proud of the whole team, not just for this final but for the whole season.”

Peebles Netball Club chair Morven Smith thanked all the travelling supporters who made the journey to Glasgow to cheer on the team and the parents who have ferried the girls to all their matches throughout the season.

A club spokesperson added: “The club would also like to thank the local businesses who funded the coach to allow the squad to travel with their families to the final: Green Field Marquees, The Cademuir

Clinic, the Green Tree Hotel, the Crown Hotel, Xanadu Beauty Clinic, Andy Flannery & Graham Irvine & Partners as well as Sainsbury’s for providing snacks and water.”

Trials for next season’s U13 squad will begin on Monday, August 12, from 5.15pm-6:45pm at the Gytes.

Sign up and play sessions for U11/U12s will start on Thursday, August 22, from 6-7pm at the high school sports hall.

Registration for both will be advertised on the club social media at the end of July.
