FED-UP residents who live on roads around Peebles High School and the new build site say car parking is “dangerous and inconsiderate”.

And last week, they met the three Tweeddale East councillors, Julie Pirone, Marshall Douglas and Robin Tatler, onsite to discuss the issues.

The elected members have created an action plan in a bid to resolve the situation, which residents fear is getting worse.

Ms Pirone said: “We organised the meeting with worried residents to hear their concerns.

“Colleagues from the project team and Police Scotland attended.

“This is a serious issue.

“We are asking everyone who drives, works or visits the school to think a lot more about where they park.”

Mr Tatler added: “As someone who lives only yards from the school, myself and my family experience, on a daily basis, the challenges caused by inconvenient and sometimes dangerous parking at the road junctions nearby.

“Whilst there has always been increased traffic and a shortage of parking around the school, this has increased dramatically with the development of the new school.

“Residents are hugely supportive of the new school development and understand the need for parking for teachers, staff and students but we are just asking for visitors to be more considerate in choosing where to park.

“Sometimes this might mean parking slightly further away, using public car parks or other streets which are wider and have more spaces.”

The councillors plan to ask council officials to reconsider white ‘T’ lining and double yellow lining at junctions; ask the project team to consider other staff parking alternatives; look at controlled entry into Springwood Road, at certain times of the day, to alleviate pressure; and look at other available roads/car parks in the area to safely accommodate vehicles.

They also reminded motorists to park well away from junctions, corners and driveways, leaving room for residents to exit and for bin lorry access.

Mr Douglas added: “We receive daily complaints concerning the inappropriate, careless and occasionally illegal parking that takes place round the school.

“Even as we met with residents, we witnessed first-hand incidents of blatant parking on corners, and even on a pavement by the school wall.

“Common sense needs to prevail, and people just to have to park with consideration for others, and even just walk a bit further, it may even benefit their own health.”
