LUXURY glamping pods designed to offer a “scenic wilderness retreat” for holidaymakers have been approved on farmland near Jedburgh.

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has rubber-stamped a bid for five pods with associated decking, footpaths and secure bicycle storage on land south west of Lower Ashtrees farmhouse, five miles south of Jedburgh.

Applicant Bryan Hoggarth, of Lower Ashtrees Farm, says the high-end glamping pods would be constructed off-site by manufacturer Pod Factory and delivered as a full unit ready for installation.

In his report approving the application, SBC planning officer Stuart Small states: “The council supports development proposals for a variety of holiday accommodation and this development would contribute to the local economy in accordance with the Scottish Borders Tourism Strategy and Action Plan.

“The principle of development is acceptable in this rural location and the accommodation provided would be of a high quality.

“The proposal would not result in over-development and would provide a tranquil environment for future holidaymakers.”

A report submitted with the application stated: “The small-scale, sustainable development will provide subtle and discreet countryside holiday accommodation for tourists visiting the area on short breaks and weekend stays.

“The site is proposed to be in operation year-round, making it an excellent option for visitors to retreat and access everything the area has to offer in all seasons.

“The intention of the applicant through this development is to create a scenic wilderness retreat for guests which will ensure that the site is well-kept and maintained to high standards.

“As the area is famous for cycling and walking there are plenty of trails and cycle pathways that can be utilised as alternative methods of transport to the site also.

“The proposed glamping site will offer contemporary, luxury holiday accommodation to visitors within a suitable travel distance of Jedburgh, Kelso, Galashiels and further afield across the country, thus being suitable for weekend trips and short stays.

“The operator also intends to use local businesses where possible to carry out groundworks and installation of services, utilising local suppliers and local labour.

“The development will also support local employment with the creation of two part-time roles for site cleaning and maintenance.”
