CONSTRUCTION work is “well ahead of schedule” on the new Peebles High School, Tweeddale East councillor Julie Pirone told a meeting last week.

Ms Pirone was speaking at The Royal Burgh of Peebles and District Community Council on Thursday evening.

The comments come after a tower crane, which has dominated the Peebles skyline for six months, was dismantled.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “Good progress is being made on the new Peebles High School.

“A major milestone has been achieved with the completion of the in-situ concrete frame and this is evident from the recent dismantling of the tower crane.

“Works are progressing well on the building elevations with the structural framing system and curtain walling frames and glazing installed approaching half of the building.

“The next main activity on the elevations is the erection of the precast concrete cladding panels between the glazed areas.

“Roofing works are progressing to the main roof area and to the roof lights.

“Internally all precast concrete stairs have been installed including the hellerup stair to the amphitheatre.

“Internal partition walls are being erected forming the teaching and other spaces, and the mechanical and electrical installation is under way.”
