VICTIMS of war and conflict will be honoured in Peebles next week.
A gathering will be held on the banks of the River Tweed on Tuesday, marking the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during the Second World War.
Organised by Tweeddale Peace Group, it will be at 6pm at the Peace Tree, between the swimming pool and the river.
There will be a 30-minute silence and then symbolic rose petals will be cast into the river.
A group spokesperson said: “The Peace Tree, a little crab apple, or scrog, was planted on January 22, 2021 to commemorate 75 years of the United Nations, to celebrate the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and to mark 40 years of the Peace Group.
“It also commemorates the life of Peter Norris, 1928-2016, co-founder with his wife, Binkie, of the Peace Group and both tireless workers for peace and justice.
“The brief event will provide an opportunity to reflect on their work and on the work of the UN and other organisations striving for peace in a troubled world.”
