A SERIAL shoplifter from Hawick who tried to steal a set of headphones from a local store has received a six-month prison sentence at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.
Forty-two-year-old Wayne Wilkes tried to leave the Sainsbury’s store in Commercial Road on the afternoon of April 30 with the headphones after removing the security tags.
But a security guard spotted him and retrieved the headphones before Wilkes made off and was later traced by police.
Defence lawyer Ross Dow said there had been a full recovery.
He explained his client was hungry and said he wanted to steal the headphones so he could sell them.
Wilkes, who is already in prison for shoplifting offences, was given a six-month jail term which will not affect his release date on December 6.
