A TOUCHING tribute has been paid to a Galashiels football stalwart following his death.

Davie Watkins took charge of Gala Fairydean at Netherdale for several seasons in the 1980s.

The club legend’s time at the helm was trophy laden and included four consecutive Qualifying Cup victories.

A spokesperson for Gala Fairydean Rovers said everyone associated with the side was “saddened” to hear of his death.

“Davie played for most Borders clubs including Duns, Hawick, Selkirk and Vale of Leithen,” they said. “He was capped for Scotland at amateur level before ending his career at Gala.

“It is here where he moved into coaching as assistant manager to Jabo Gray before taking over the manager’s role and leading the club to unprecedented success in the 1980s with a record-breaking four Scottish Qualifying Cup trophies in a row.

“Even latterly when his health was suffering, he would regularly come along to our games and regale us with his stories of past successes, which we all enjoyed.

“We are all going to miss him and the club wish to pass on our condolences to Irene and the family at this very sad time.

“Davie’s funeral is at the Borders crematorium on Tuesday, July 16, at 1pm.”
