A STALWART of Peebles Beltane Festival has sadly passed away.
The late Mitchell ‘Mitch’ Johnston, who had joined the annual Beltane Float Parade every year for 75 years, died on April 8.
Mitch was first bitten by the Beltane bug when he was a Beltane Mouse at the age of five in 1948.
Every year since then Mitch found a way to take part in the festivities, including taking shore leave from the Merchant Navy just in time for Beltane Week.
Last year the Peeblesshire News spoke to Mitch to mark his 75th year of celebrating Beltane.
At the time, Mitch told this newspaper: “I can proudly say that Peebles Beltane is the greatest show on Earth.
“Neighbours get together to help with various tasks, newcomers to Peebles are welcomed and get involved.
“Visitors come to Peebles just to see the festivities. Groups from the rugby club to nursery children all take part.
“It showcases our town and this fills me with pride.
“I hope that by keeping this tradition alive the baton will be handed on for generations to come.”

He added: “My fondest memory of Beltanes past has to be the 1983 [festival].
“My daughter Michelle was Chief Maid as part of the Beltane Court.
“She was beautiful and recognised the honour it was to have been chosen.
“My wife Pat and myself were so proud of her.”
In celebration of Mitch, his friends and family made a special float for this year’s fancy dress parade.
On behalf of Mitch’s family and friends, a spokesperson said: “Mitch received in 2019 a special award from the Peebles March Riding and Beltane Queen Festival in recognition of his taking part over many years.
“Mitch was chuffed to bits over this.
“So as a nod to our dear friend Mitch, thanks for the memories.”
