POLICE officers in the Borders will take on the National Three Peaks Challenge in aid of a local charity.
Ten officers from the Borders have today (Thursday, April 18) set off for the 24-hour challenge which will see them climb Britain's highest peaks - Ben Nevis (Scotland), Scaffel Pike (England), and Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa (Wales).
The team are raising funds for Nurture the Borders, a local charity which supports families during pregnancy and in their first two years with a baby.
Sergeant Gavin Liddle, who organised the challenge, said: "The team are ready for what is going to be a tough challenge.
"We are glad to be doing this to support Nurture, and I am personally grateful for the support they have given my family.
"This support is vital for those suffering mental health issues before and after the birth of a child, and I hope that this challenge raises awareness of their great work."
Joining Sergeant Liddle for the challenge are PC’s Liam Lawrence, Scott Rutherford, Abbie McCaughey, Gordon Johnston, Connor Flockhart, Ishbel Ingles, Caroline Frankitti, Roger Changleng and Inspector Robbie Noble.
Rosie Kennedy, CEO and founder of Nurture, said: “Everyone at Nurture the Borders is so grateful and proud of the team for taking on this epic challenge to support our vital work. We really appreciate the effort, conviction, and time each member has put in to prepare and raise funds."
According to the charity, one in five mums and one in 10 dads are diagnosed with a mental health illness during pregnancy and the first two years of their baby's life.
Many other parents also struggle during this time without a diagnosis.
Nurture the Borders offers free support, education, advocacy and therapy to new parents who are struggling with their mental health.
Ms Kennedy added: "Last year we had 188 referrals for support so every penny raised will make a real difference and go to supporting local families at one of the most important times in their lives.
"I would like to thank the ten amazing police officers and those supporting them for all their efforts, it is tremendous what you are doing.
"I hope the weather is kind to you and you all make it safely to the end.
"We are behind you all the way!”
At the time of publication the officers had raised £2,260 for the charity.
