TWO Galashiels Boxing Club youngsters have tasted success on the national stage.
The Boxing Scotland Development C,D,E Championships were held at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell over the weekend.
On Saturday, Mason Maycock took to the ring in a bout with Kamryn Talbot, of the Kier Hardie Boxing Club.
In a replay of the Golden Gloves final – which Maycock won in February – the Galashiels fighter claimed the Scottish Development C 35.5kg 2011 gold medal.
Both boxers showcased their skill and determination, but it was Maycock who ultimately prevailed.
With precision he landed a series of clean punches that caught the judges’ attention. The scorecards revealed a close contest, with Maycock securing a hard-fought 3/2 split decision.
Then on Sunday it was Sam Brown’s chance at a title in the 70kg C Development Championship final.
Brown kept the pressure on his opponent, Alkali Gaye, throughout the bout. With relentless determination, the Borderer secured a unanimous decision victory.
He is now champion at 70kg in the B & C categories this season.
A Galashiels Boxing Club spokesperson said: “This recent triumph adds to both lads’ list of achievements. Their dedication and hard work is starting to pay off. Both lads can now look forward to the Scottish Golden Gloves this month.”
