A PEEBLESSHIRE MP has reacted to the news that David Cameron has been appointed as Foreign Secretary.
David Mundell MP, who served as Secretary of State for Scotland in Mr Cameron's Conservative government in 2015, has said he welcomes the former Prime Minister's return.
This morning (Monday, November 13) Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sacked Home Secretary Suella Braverman following a controversial article she wrote for The Time in which she accused the police of a biased approach ahead of pro-Palestine marches which took place on Armistice Day (November 11).
Ms Braverman has now been replaced by Foreign Secretary James Cleverly MP, who has in turn been replaced in the Foreign Office by Mr Cameron.
In order to be appointed as Foreign Secretary Mr Cameron was sworn into the House of Lords, he is not a sitting MP.
Reacting to this morning's news, David Mundell, the Conservative MP for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale, said: "At a time when there are a wide range of challenges facing the UK and the wider international community, including the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and conflict in the Middle East, and the need for continuing positive engagement with our partners in Europe, I welcome Mr Cameron’s appointment as Foreign Secretary.
"As a former Prime Minister, he already has many of the important personal relationships needed to help in the diplomatic drive for global security and stability and I wish him every success in his new role.”
Mr Cameron resigned from parliament in 2016 following the outcome of the Brexit referendum.
On his return to government Mr Cameron called Prime Minister Rishi Sunak a "strong and capable" leader, despite having disagreed on decisions made by the current administration.
Other changes to the Cabinet include the sacking of Housing Minister Rachel Maclean, and the resignations of Schools Minister Nick Gibb, Health Minister Will Quince and Neil O'Brien, and Environment Secretary Therese Coffey.
