A STALWART of an armed forces charity in the Borders was among guests at a special reception at 10 Downing Street last week.

After a rewarding RAF career, Clive Hamilton, from Peebles, has spent almost 20 years as a caseworker with the Soldiers’ Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families’ Association (SSAFA).

And was nominated for his invitation by his local MP David Mundell.

The Whitehall gathering, hosted by Johnny Mercer, the UK veterans minister, was celebrating the contribution of ex-service men and women and those who support them.

Clive has been a SSAFA volunteer since retiring as a squadron leader from the RAF in 2004, initially living in Morayshire and later in the Borders.

As a nominated caseworker, he is the first direct point of contact for ex-service people and their families who have been referred to the charity for assistance.

After assessing the full circumstances, Clive arranges practical help for clients from appropriate ex-service charities and other agencies, confidentially guiding them through a challenging period in their lives.

Clive said: “It is interesting work and I’m often dealing with a number of cases at any one time. It is most rewarding when good outcomes are achieved.

“SSAFA always aims to do its utmost to make a difference to peoples’ lives during difficult times.”

During the reception at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Clive met fellow ex-servicemen and women, charity representatives and other guests from across the UK, who were given a warm welcome by the minister.
