DRUGS valued at £1,350 were recovered following police raids on the Borders homes of Dale MacDonald and his mother.

Cash totalling £630 was also seized in addition to the quantities of cannabis and diazepam.

The 32-year-old pleaded guilty at Jedburgh Sheriff Court to three charges of possession of controlled drugs.

Depute fiscal Alison Atkins said the offences were detected after police obtained search warrants for both properties in Drumlanrig Place, Hawick.

She said: "The accused was present at his mother's address. No one was present in his own house."

Ms Atkins said the value of cannabis found in both properties totalled £900 while the diazepam tablets were valued at £450.

Defence lawyer Ross Dow pointed out the plea was to possession of the drugs.

He said: "The accused suffered from a number of issues and had bought drugs in bulk to save on costs.

"Essentially he was self-medicating to deal with issues such as agoraphobia, anxiety, depression and epilepsy.

"But he assures me this is all in the past and is no longer using it as a habit. He had been smoking cannabis for seven years prior to this."

Sheriff Peter Paterson imposed fines of £100 on each charge which came to a total of £300 and imposed a Victim Surcharge of £20.
