THERE will be no more reservations at an eight-bedroom former Borders village hotel if a bid to convert it into a family home gets the green light.
Approval from Scottish Borders Council is being sought to change the use of The George Hotel at 29 Galashiels Road in Walkerburn from commercial to residential use.
The property has been vacant since 2017, and since March 2022 there have been a total of 22 viewings, with multiple offers which were not acceptable at the time.
Cullen Kilshaw also advised that offers had not been completed as buyers had been unable to secure mortgages against the property as the hotel has not been able to generate income as a commercial business for approximately six years.
As there is no record of earnings, lenders have been unwilling to provide a commercial mortgage on the building.
In her submission, the applicant says: “We are committed to ensuring that the proposed conversion respects the character of the existing building and complements its surroundings.
“Our aim is to create a comfortable and functional family home while preserving the historical integrity of the property.”
